Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) – Miguel Cairo knocked in a pair of runs and rookie Travis Wood tossed seven shutout innings, as the Cincinnati Reds earned a 4-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a three-game series at PNC Park.
Cairo, filling in for All-Star first baseman Joey Votto, who sat out the game with a sprained right wrist, had an RBI single and a sacrifice fly for the Reds, who have won three straight and five of six. Chris Heisey added an inside-the-park home run in the eighth.
Wood (2-1) picked up his second big league victory after yielding only two singles and one walk while fanning four. The left-hander lowered his earned run average to 2.42 over his seven starts this season.
