Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Chris Heisey scored the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning thanks to a misplay by Pittsburgh catcher Chris Snyder, and the Cincinnati Reds edged the Pirates, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park.
The Pirates had rallied with two runs in the ninth to force extra innings.
Heisey beat out a bunt to start the 12th. Pittsburgh reliever Wilfredo Ledezma (0-2) was then lifted in favor ofJoel Hanrahan after Joey Votto was hit by a pitch.
After Scott Rolen singled to load the bases, Jonny Gomes broke his bat on a slow roller up the middle. Shortstop Ronny Cedeno fielded the ball and threw home, but Snyder dropped the ball.
