Greg Romeus To Undergo Immediate Back Surgery

It's been long rumored that Greg Romeus may be more injured than head coach Dave Wannstedt had been letting on. Those rumors have been confirmed as Romeus will undergo back surgery to repair a disc in his back:

"Our top priority is doing what is best for Greg," coach Dave Wannstedt said. "After consulting with him, his family and our medical staff, it was determined that immediate surgery is the best option for Greg both personally and athletically. We expect him to have a full recovery and return for the conclusion of the season."

I wouldn't get too excited about the possibility of him coming back for the conclusion of the season. I expect that would only mean the last few games and Romeus has already missed nearly all of training camp and will have missed most of the season at the point he can return. He'll have serious conditioning issues and I don't know how much help he would be.

Romeus' absence will be a big one for the Panthers. They clearly could have used him healthy for the Utah game and while backup Brandon Lindsey did well against New Hampshire this past weekend, that was an FCS foe. Going up against 'The U' next Thursday will be an entirely different story. Romeus could try for a sixth year of eligibility (as Adam Gunn did when he missed all but one game in 2008), but as he's a top prospect for the NFL Draft, I don't know that he'd want to try to come back.

With the Jason Douglas incident and now this, Pitt clearly has not had a great week.
