College Football Rankings: WVU The Lone Big East Representative In BCS Top 25

The West Virginia Mountaineers rank No. 15 in the first BCS Rankings of the 2011 season, and indeed hold the distinction of being the only Big East team in the Top 25. The Cincinnati Bearcats and Rutgers Scarlet Knights tie WVU atop the Big East standings at 5-1, but the BCS excluded those two, most likely due to their weaker schedules. Neither Cincinnati nor Rutgers has played a ranked opponent. In contrast, WVU's lone loss this season came against the LSU Tigers, 47-21. That's the same LSU Tigers club which leads the BCS at this early juncture.

The SEC is strongly represented in the BCS rankings. In addition to No. 1 LSU, the SEC boasts the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide and the No. 14 South Carolina Gamecocks.

Elsewhere in the Big East, it ought to go without saying, but we'll note that the 3-4 Pittsburgh Panthers do not figure into the BCS Top 25.
