Ed DeChellis Leaving Penn State For Naval Academy

Well, here's a shocker to get the offseason going: Penn State basketball coach Ed DeChellis is reportedly leaving Happy Valley to coach the United States Naval Academy, according to David Jones of the Harrisburg Patriot-News. DeChellis took the Nittany Lions to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in his eight-year tenure back in March, but it appears that wasn't enough to keep him in State College. Jones says he's been looking for jobs for a while.

DeChellis explored options in the aftermath of the team's 2011 NCAA tournament run, its first in his 8-year run at Penn State. Two very good coaching sources told me in April that he was offered and turned down a substantially more lucrative deal at a Midwestern mid-major school but turned it down because his agent had assured him he could get an even more attractive deal at a high-major. That turned out not to be the case and DeChellis was forced to lower his sights.

There are a ton of questions to be answered and we don't have many right now. The press conference scheduled for 7 P.M. tonight will hopefully clear up a lot, but until then, there will be a lot of speculation.
