The 41-year-old Gary, who returned to Duquesne last season after a two-year stint as coach at Centenary, was hired Friday at Purdue, filling coach Matt Painter's final vacancy. Gary resigned at Centenary after the school announced in July 2009 that it planned to drop to Division III.

"When that job came up, I decided, 'Why not?' I wanted to build a program," Gary said. "Coach Everhart understood that. When I came back, I didn't anticipate (the Purdue opening) to come up. To me, it's not a lateral move. It's a top-25 program, I've known coach Painter for a long time and I'm going back home."

Meanwhile, Wright will head on to "other opportunities," according to head coach Ron Everhart. Wright averaged just 3.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game as a freshman, but the Dukes don't have a ton of size on their roster, particularly after the departure of Damian Saunders due to graduation.
