Xavier Paul scored on Jose Tabata's single off the glove of Chase Utley in the 12th inning as the Pirates defeated the Philadelphia Phillies Friday, winning the first game of their homestand in dramatic fashion.
Jeff Karstens pitched seven strong innings for the Pirates, allowing one run in seven innings while striking out four and walking none. He was followed by five scoreless innings of relief by Evan Meek, Joel Hanrahan, Daniel McCutchen and Danny Moskos.
Utley's RBI single in the sixth gave the Phillies their first run of the game, but the Pirates answered when Ronny Cedeno circled the bases on a walk, a sacrifice, a wild pitch and finally a sacrifice fly by Jose Tabata.
After that, neither team mustered much offense for several innings - the Pirates' offense only had five singles for the whole game, to go along with seven walks. In the 12th, however, Paul singled with two outs, then stole second, and Tabata brought him home with a single.
