Led by a strong start by Charlie Morton and a surprisingly good game by Lyle Overbay, the Pirates defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 in front of a sold-out crowd at PNC Park Saturday night.
The Phillies' Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a double and came around to score on a groundout by Ryan Howard, but the Pirates answered in the bottom of the first with an RBI single by Andrew McCutchen and a run-scoring double by Overbay. The Phillies tied the game in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Domonic Brown. In the bottom of the fourth, however, the slow-footed Overbay led off with an unlikely triple. Chris Snyder brought him home with a groundout, and Brandon Wood added a solo homer to make it 4-2.
The Pirates added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth, giving Joel Hanrahan room to struggle a bit in the ninth. Hanrahan allowed one run and left the bases loaded, and the Pirates won 6-3.
Morton pitched seven innings and registered five strikeouts, and Overbay and McCutchen had three hits each.
The Pirates silenced the substantial group of Phillies fans on hand - the crowd consisted of about half Philadelphia fans.
