Pirates Vs. Braves: Bucs Lose In Extra Innings Yet Again

The Pirates played yet another extra-inning game against the Braves on Wednesday, and yet again they lost by a run, falling 2-1 in 10 innings.

Paul Maholm was tremendous for the Pirates on a night in which the Bucs badly needed their starter to work deep into the game. He struck out eight and walked none in eight innings, allowing only one run.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead when Garrett Jones homered in the sixth. But they botched numerous other opportunities to scored against Atlanta starter Jair Jurrjens, mostly by failing to lay down bunts and running into outs.

Jurrjens ended up getting through seven innings himself, and the rest was up to the two teams' bullpens. It was the Pirates' that finally caved, as Chris Leroux - who had just been returned to the roster to help the Bucs' relievers recover from their 19-inning game Tuesday - allowed three hits and the winning run in the 10th.
