Joe Beimel Dropped As Pirates Promote Ross Ohlendorf

Jenifer Langosch notes that the Pirates have designated reliever Joe Beimel for assignment in order to make room for Ross Ohlendorf, who will start Tuesday night.

The number of roster moves the Pirates are making to make sure their pitching staff has functional arms is getting dizzying, but it’s hard to have any problem with the Pirates dropping Beimel, who spent the entire year either hurt or ineffective. He allowed six homers in his 25.1 innings with the Bucs. He pitched short stints because he was supposed to be effective against lefties, but he wasn’t, allowing a .798 OPS against them. Meanwhile, he got torched by righties, who burned him for a 1.027 OPS. Beimel is 34, but he’s left-handed, so it’s not at all hard to see him bouncing around the league for a couple more years, but as a Pirate, he looked like he was just about done.
