Federal Judge Approves Civic Arena Demolition

In a story that may have flown under the radar last week, a federal judge approved the planned demolition of the Civic Arena on Friday.

City crews have been preparing the nearly 50-year-old arena for demolition for some time, but repeated efforts from conservation groups, namely Preservation Pittsburgh, have slowed theirefforts down.

The judge’s ruling doesn’t mark the end of the fight, and it has already been stated that an appeal against his ruling will be filed, but it does show that the fight may be nearing its conclusion.

Pittsburgh Penguins officials have gone on record in favor of the demolition, saying that that the now-dilapidated arena is a hindrance to further redevelopment of the Hill District.
