Hines Ward may be best known by sports fans for playing football for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the former player has done plenty off the field to gain recognition. There was Dancing with the Stars and this season, Ward is serving as a game analyst.

Now Ward, the Steelers' all time receiver, is throwing his hat in the ring for the 2013 Ironman Triathlon.

As the Bizjournals article points out, Ward will no doubt bring some good publicity to the event. He's maintained a fairly positive image throughout his career. His appearance is also a timely one since Lance Armstrong, who was scheduled to appear, was banned from the event due to his alleged doping.

The event is a grueling one to be sure - even for a former football player. Ward will have to endure a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2 marathon, according to local TV station WTAE.
