Pitt center Malcolm Gilbert to transfer

Anthony Gruppuso-US PRESSWIRE

Pitt suffered a bit of a blow Thursday night when it was announced late that Pitt center Malcolm Gilbert would be transferring from the team. According to the official release from the athletic department, Gilbert wants to play with his brother, who is currently at Fairfield.

For the Panthers, it's the second transfer in as many months as guard John Johnson announced he was leaving in November and ended up at Penn State. But unlike the Johnson transfer, Gilbert's move hurts even more. He was a little used player as a true freshman last year and was redshirting this season, but the transfer hurts the team's depth at center for the future. With Dante Taylor graduating, Steven Adams is the only returning center on the roster for next year ... and that's if he doesn't bolt for the NBA first.

Even if Adams does come back, the move clearly puts Pitt in a bind. Recruiting a center was already pretty high on the list for the 2013 class, but now it's an absolute priority.
