Penn State's Frank Molinaro captured the individual national championship at 149 pounds on Saturday night, defeating Minnesota's No. 7 seeded Dylan Ness 4-1 at the NCAA wrestling championships in St. Louis.
The victory capped a perfect 33-0 season for Molinaro, an All-American and the No. 1 seed in the tournament. He defeated Chris Villalonga of Cornell, Scott Sakaguchi of Oregon State, Eric Grajales of Michigan and Justin Accordino of Hofstra before his win against Ness in the final.
The victory gives Penn State its first individual national championship of the evening after clinching the team title with a third place finish from Dylan Alton during the morning session. David Taylor (166 pounds), Ed Ruth (174 pounds) and Quentin Wright (184 pounds) will try to keep the momentum going in their quests for individual titles later this evening.
