The Pittsburgh Penguins were able to gain a late edge on the Devils in the first period to take a 2-1 lead into the dressing rooms at CONSOL Energy Center.
Chris Kunitz was able to open the scoring shortly after the period began, putting a shot past Martin Brodeur just 1:04 into the game for his 23rd goal of the season. Evgeni Malkin picked up an assist on the tally.
The Devils tied the game shortly after when Zach Parise scored his 30th goal of the season unassisted at 5:10.
With less than a minute remaining in the period, Jordan Staal provided a much needed momentum boost when he scored his 23rd goal of the year with just 56 seconds left in the period with an assist from Matt Cooke to make the score 2-1.
Pittsburgh holds a 14-11 edge in shots and the Devils were not able to convert on the lone power play opportunity for either team so far.
