James Kirwa of Kenya won the 2012 Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday. Kirwa pulled ahead of Nixon Kiplagat, a fellow Kenyan who led most of the way, in the final stretch for the victory.
Kirwa turned in a time of 2:14:09. In second place was last year's winner Jeffrey Eggelston, who finished with a time of 2:14:26. Kiplagat finished with a 2:14:46 time.
Morocco's Malika Mejdoub won the women's marathon with a final time of 2:39:30. She narrowly beat Alemtsehey Misganaw, of Ethiopia, who had a final time of 2:39:31. In third place was Hirut Beyene, also of Ethiopia, with a 2:39:56 time.
The half-marathon saw new records in both the men's and women's results. Julius Koskei, of Kenya, won with a time of 1:02:57. Fatuma Sado of Ethiopia won the women's half-marathon with a 1:12:43 time.
A total of 25,000 runners entered the races that were part of Sunday's event.
