The 2012 Wimbledon Championships are set to begin on Monday, June 25 and two former champions of the tournament have earned the top seeds. Novak Djokovic, the defending champion of the tournament, will look to extend his streak of Grand Slam finals appearances to five.
Since his win in the 2011 Wimbledon, Djokovic has won every Grand Slam tournament with the exception of the 2012 French Open, which he lost to Rafael Nadal in the final.
Russian-born Maria Sharapova earned the top seeded singles spot for the women, and will look to follow up her French Open victory with continued strong play. She has struggled throughout her career at Wimbledon since winning in 2004, her first career Grand Slam victory. In 2011 she reached the final for the first time since her 2004 victory, but lost in straight sets to Petra Kvitova.
Kvitova is the tournament's fourth seeded in women's singles, two spots ahead of Serena Williams.
