on July 1, free- agency in the NHL opens up, and the Pittsburgh Penguins have their eyes set on Ryan Suter who is coveted by just about every team in the league. And according to ThePensBlog.com, the Penguins have been in this situation once before but things didn't quite pan out as they expected:
The Penguins tried this with Dan Hamhuis two years ago, and it didn't work out. The Penguins did it because they wanted to see if they could sign him before he hit free agency, and they didn't want to waste their time.
Outside of the Penguins showing a strong interest, the Detroit Red Wings are also said to be in the hunt for Suter's services. The 27-year-old posted career highs in assists, points and power-play points during the 2011-2012 season.
