After coming out on top in their heat to make the finals, the United States women's 4x100m freestyle relay team led by Allison Schmitt along with Missy Franklin, Jessica Hardy and Lia Neal, couldn't bring home the gold medal and instead settled for bronze as it finished behind the Netherlands, which took the silver, and Australia, which claimed the gold.
The U.S. set an American record with a time of 3:34.24, but Australia set an Olympic record of 3:33.15.
Schmitt, who swam the anchor leg, finished with a 350m split time of 3:06.23 and swam the final length of 3:34.24.
Despite getting off to a strong start with Missy Franklin and Jessica Hardy swimming the first two legs, the United States fell into second place by the end of Lia Neal's leg.
