London Olympics 2012 Medal Count: Team USA Adds Five More On Monday

Team USA earned five medals in Monday competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics, boosting their total medal count to 17. All five of the medals won by the Americans on Monday came from action in and above the water with four medals in swimming and the fifth in diving. Two of medals won were gold.

Missy Franklin, a favorite in swimming, won gold for her performance in the women's 100m backstroke. It was the first gold medal of her career. Matt Grevers won the other gold medal for Team USA on Monday, cruising to a win in the men's 100m backstroke. His teammate Nick Thorman won the silver in that event.

The five medals won keep the United States tied with China for the overall lead in the medal count with 17 apiece. China has nine gold medals, leading the field, and Team USA has five, which is the second most at the games.
