Team USA closed the deficit to just one medal as they continue their back-and-forth fight for the overall medal lead with China. The Americans are now two shy of the Chinese in the gold medal count as well, after Jen Suhr added gold late in the day with a win in the pole vault. The highlights for the American delegation were team victories in non-medal contests, specifically the women's soccer team's dramatic 4-3 extra time win over Canada. The men's basketball team also faced a tough Argentina squad, but pulled away with an offensive blitz in a chippy second half.
In third place now are the Russians, who jumped over the host nation. But the real battle will be between the powerhouse Chinese and American teams over the final week of competition. Here's a more complete look at the medal count:
- China, 64 (31 gold, 19 silver, 14 bronze)
- United States, 63 (29, 15, 19)
- Russia, 42 (7, 17, 18)
- Great Britain, 40 (18, 11, 11)
- Japan, 28 (2, 12, 14)
