Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez was scratched from the lineup of Wednesday's series finale against the Cincinnati Reds with a injury to his wrist, and the problem continues to bother him.
Alvarez came to the park complaining of discomfort in his right wrist, but he or the team don't know where the issue came from. He was unable to swing a bat in warmups and was heavily bandaged after the game, according to Tom Singer of MLB.com.
The 25-year-old out of Vanderbilt is batting .242 with 27 home runs and 73 runs batted in on the season. Alvarez has set new career highs in games played, at bats, runs, doubles, hits, homers, RBI, and is posting his best OPS in 2012.
The Pirates are off on Thursday and will take the time to re-assess Alvarez's injury.
