Gerrit Cole, Top Pirates Prospect, Wins 1st Class AAA Start

Top Pirates prospect Gerrit Cole made his Class AAA debut for Indianapolis Saturday and picked up a win, striking out seven and walking one while allowing three runs in six innings.

Cole allowed all three of those runs in the first, giving up hits to the first three batters he faced, followed by a sacrifice fly, followed by a two-run triple by Danny Dorn. Cole then got a grounder and a strikeout, and went on to pitch five straight scoreless innings.

Meanwhile, Indianapolis piled up all eight of its runs in the first three innings, so Cole had a cushion to work with.

The Pirates promoted Cole earlier in the week after he struck out 60 batters in 59 innings for Class AA Altoona. The first overall pick in the 2011 draft figures to make his major-league debut next season, probably after getting a bit more experience at Class AAA to start 2013.
