The Pirates were throttled 12-2 in the opening game of a weekend series against the Chicago Cubs. Pittsburgh's offense was far worse than the defense Friday night.
The Pirates somehow combined for seven errors in the contest. Rookies Starling Marte and Brock Holt both had two each and Gaby Sanchez, Rod Barajas and Josh Harrison all added one. If that weren't enough, manager Clint Hurdle was also ejected from the game in the sixth inning for arguing a call.
Pittsburgh starter A.J. Burnett was roughed up for seven runs through five innings, but only three of those were earned due to the errors. On the other side, Chicago starter Travis Wood was nearly perfect, giving up only a single hit through six innings to pick up his fifth win of the season.
The Pirates will look to bounce back on the field and at the plate Saturday.
