The BIG 12 and the SEC will have a formal bowl agreement in place. How often it comes into play will be a little bit of a question mark.

With the new national semifinals almost in place that will help determine who plays for the National Championship, the landscape of the major bowl games will be shifting considerably. One of the newest developments is that the Big 12 and SEC have reportedly agreed to send their champions to a bowl game if they don't qualify for the National semifinals.

There is no word on which bowl will take the winner of these two conferences, but this is an important revelation for West Virginia, the Big 12's newest member.

This is important, because what makes the Rose Bowl special is that it features the same two conferences and often lends itself to rematches of great games from its history. But with the National Champiosnhip expanding to four teams, and the SEC seemingly always having at least one team in the two two in the entire country, it makes you wonder just how often the champions of these two conferences will both miss out on the national semifinals and play in this game. Gary Parrish might have said it best.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are coming off a season series win against the Washington Nationals, the Pirates kick off interleague play against the Tigers.

The Pittsburgh Pirates, and most notably Andrew MCutchen, are coming off an impressive win over the Washington Nationals on Thursday, and on Friday they will be kicking off interleague play against the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and you can find the game on ROOT Sports.

Detroit is one of the most powerful teams in the American League with Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder anchoring the middle of their lineup. Oh, and did I mention that Justin Verlander, the reigning AL Cy Young and MVP award winner, will be starting for the Tigers tonight? This won't be anything like playing against the Nationals, unfortunately.

The Pittsburgh Penguins had a disappointing exit in the first round of the Playoffs this year, and that could lead to some questions about the roster in the offseason. They currently have three very expensive stars on their roster, and it will be up to Ray Shero if they elect to move any of the three to make room for some better support players. If any player moves, it will almost assuredly be Jordan Staal. According to Dejan Kovcevic of the Tribune-Review, the Penguins would be wise to wait on a Staal trade.

They’re profitable at Consol Energy Center and always will be able to spend up to the NHL’s salary cap. The question they’ll need to deliberate, with Staal eligible for free agency next summer, is whether it’s wise to pay half of a $60 million-plus payroll to three centermen.

I don’t envy Shero. Any GM with a Crosby/Malkin roster must contend every year, but Shero can’t ignore the long-term financial ledger. If he ever does, the roster will be filled out with AHL All-Stars.

Staal is the most expendable of the three, which is not to say that he is a bad player at all. He just isn't as important to the team as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. So if the Penguins elect to move somebody to clear up some salary, it will be Staal.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been bringing in offensive lineman left and right. It was one of their weaknesses last season and the Steelers seem intent on adding some depth at that position both through the draft and in free agency. They've added a new tackle who might end up on the practice squad, but should still provide organizational depth.

Jolly went unselected in the 2010 draft out of the University of North Carolina and has spent some time with the Atlanta Falcons on their practice squad, a role that he will likely continue with the Steelers. If everything goes well for the Steelers he probably won't be seeing the field at all for Pittsburgh this year. But you can never, ever have enough offensive lineman.

The Nationals' offense woke up on Wednesday night, and Gio Gonzalez and the bullpen kept the Pirates at bay for most of the game. When it was all said and done the Nats took the first game of the series 7-4. The Pirates will have a chance to even things up on Thursday. The game starts at 7:05 pm and you can find the game on ROOT Sports.

It won't get any easier for the Pirates on Thursday as they have to go against Jordan Zimmermann, another strong arm from the Nationals bullpen. he doesn't have the same hook that Gonzalez seemed to confound Pirates hitters with on Wednesday. But Zimmermann has a very strong fastball with a lot of good movement that should still keep the Pirates off-balance. The Pirates will counter by sending James McDonald to the mound.

The New Jersey Nets don't have to worry about playing any games this time of year so they can focus all of their energy on trying to get some new guys onto the team for next year. They've been scheduling some group workouts for their team and Pitt's Ashton Gibbs will be taking part in one of them, according to our Pitt blog Cardiac Hill.

The Nets are pretty deep at guard and have lots of younger options, so I don't know that Gibbs fits in there as well as he might with a team like the Lakers in need of a sniper or two. But if he impresses enough at the combine, maybe he'll get called back for an individual workout.

New Jersey has an established point guard in the roster in Deron Williams, but he could be leaving in free agency this Summer which would ruin their depth at the position. If they figure out that Deron Williams intends to go elsewhere, Gibbs could be a good depth pick late in the draft.

Pitt is suing the Big East Conference with the hopes of trying to get to the ACC sooner than the Conference's departure period the Conference has in place would let them. According to Jerry DiPaola of the Trib, Pitt could have some solid precedent to point to when making their case. West Virginia just won a very similar case against the conference, and Pitt has a lot of the same things going for it.

"A number of things have resulted in a vastly different landscape for the Big East over the past 18 months that could further support teams departing," said Thomas F. Holt Jr. of the Boston law firm K&L Gates who led West Virginia’s effort to leave the Big East. "Pitt may very well have a good case in support of exiting the conference early," Holt said.

Pitt's case is based on the departure of West Virginia as well as that of TCU, which hadn't even played a game as a member before electing to leave. If the conference did not hold those two schools to the standards they have for every other team, it doesn't seem like they will be able to hold Pitt to them either.

The Pittsburgh Steelers took David DeCastro with the No. 24 pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, but it may be a while until they get him under contract. Steelers Depot takes a look at some of the picks before DeCastro that has signed and tries to guess what his deal might be. Steelers Depot also compares DeCastro's situation to that of the No. 24 overall pick last year, Cameron Jordan. One issue ahead is the number of guaranteed years in the deal.

That deal included a $4.12 million signing bonus. It figures that DeCastro will receive a deal very close to that of Jordan and it should only have three years guaranteed as well. Until DeCastro is boxed out of a four-year guarantee though by a contract ahead of him, he will likely remain unsigned.

Only having one year under the new CBA complicates things because we don't have a lot of precedent for how these deals should look. The No. 19 overall pick under contract is already signed, so we're about five contracts away from figuring out what DeCastro's contract is going to look like. Unfortunately, there is really no way to know how long that will take.
