It's not often that a team gives three quarterbacks significant playing time in a conference win, but that's exactly what Penn State did Saturday at Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium, where the Nittany Lions defeated the Golden Gophers 33-21.
Robert Bolden started the game at quarterback for the Lions, but went out in the second quarter with what is reportedly a concussion. Both Matthew McGloin and Kevin Newsome played in his relief, but only McGloin threw a pass, going 6/13 for 77 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Derek Moye pulled in both McGloin touchdowns, and racked up 81 yards on three receptions overall. Freshman running back Silas Redd led Penn State in rushing with some electrifying runs, totaling 70 yards on nine carries.
Injuries considered, it was a solid day for the Penn State offense. It was a different story on the other side of the ball, though.
Minnesota out-gained Penn State 433-351 behind 111 rushing yards from running back DeLeon Eskridge and 299 yards passing from veteran quarterback Adam Weber.
The Lions were repeatedly burned in pass coverage and allowed Eskridge to slither for lots of yardage after contact. They also yielded two fourth down conversions.
With Michigan's high-powered offense invading Beaver Stadium next Saturday night, Penn State has a lot to work on with the defense this week in practice.
