Penn State fell to 6-5 on the season Saturday night with a 66-59 loss against Duquesne at the CONSOL Energy Center. Today, we take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly of the Nittany Lions' effort as they prepare for host Mount St. Mary's next week.
The Good
-Tim Frazier bounced back from an 0-for-12 performance against Lafayette on Wednesday night with 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists. He's posted bigger numbers this season, but just getting him back to the all-purpose threat he's been much of the year will be key for his team moving forward.
-Trey Lewis returned to Penn State's lineup after missing the Lafayette game with a flare-up of his existing ankle injury. He certainly wasn't his best, but on a team short on scorers, his 6.6 points per game are crucial.
-The Lions dominated on the glass 39-28 and outshot the Dukes from the field. If not for turnovers, Saturday's game was probably Penn State's most complete offensive performance away from home this season.
The Bad
-The Dukes pushed and controlled the pace on the Lions in the second half. Penn State prides itself on being able to run with anyone, so that fact probably isn't going to sit well with the team on the ride home.
-Ross Travis only saw nine minutes against the Dukes after running into foul trouble early. He's been a difference maker for Penn State when he's been on, so losing him for much of the evening was a painful loss.
-Penn State was 4-for-16 from the perimeter. Not good.
The Ugly
-The Lions' 23 turnovers are unacceptable to say the least. It doesn't matter who the opponent is, Penn State won't win many more games posting ghastly totals like those. If there's a problem during this three-game losing streak that coach Patrick Chambers has to nip in the bud now, it's this.
-Forward Jonathan Graham is still recovering from a bout with mono. Penn State really could have used him in all three losses this past week.
