Penn State Coaching Search: Harvard's Tim Murphy Reportedly High On List

Harvard coach Tim Murphy is high on Penn State's list of potential replacements for former head coach Joe Paterno, Mark Wogenrich of the Allentown Morning Call reported on Monday night.

Murphy has coached 18 seasons at Harvard, compiling a 119-59 record and winning six Ivy League championships. He's also made stops at Cincinnati, where he went 17-37-1 in five seasons as well as Maine, where he went 15-8 in two campaigns.

Wogenrich said it's believed Murphy meets the "highly ethical" standards Penn State's six-person committee led by acting athletic director David Joyner is seeking in a coach. He has experience in helping rebuild a program in turmoil as the Bearcats were on NCAA probation when he was hired in 1989. The program improved from 1-9-1 in his first season to 8-3 in his last season.

Murphy's name has been rumored to be part of the search from the start, but Wogenrich is the first to report that he's getting a serious look from the committee.
