David Jones of the Harrisburg Patriot-News has updated his story from earlier in the evening, and he has some very interesting new details about the motivations behind Ed DeChellis' departure from Penn State.
DeChellis, now 52, is not interested in coaching more than another 8-10 years. He felt a lack of respect and commitment from the Penn State administration. He was unable to get an extension or raise on a contract lasting three more seasons. His daughters have completed college and are out of the house. His wife Kim, I've been told, loved the idea of living in a beautiful area bordering the major metro of Washington/Baltimore.
And, most of all, he was wanted.
My guess is that his contract situation wasn't the only thing he felt disrespected by. Penn State was forced to practice in Penn State's dump of an IM Building at one point this season while Bon Jovi used the Bryce Jordan Center and its adjoining practice facility. I don't know much about Navy, but I'm willing to bet it has a nicer facility than the IM Building for its basketball team to practice in. If DeChellis didn't feel athletic director Tim Curley and the other suits in Athletics had his back, this move is considerably less surprising.
