Penn State Vs. Indiana State: Rob Bolden Will Start, But Matt McGloin Will Also Play

Rob Bolden will be Penn State’s starting quarterback in the Nittany Lions’ opener against Penn State, Lions 247 reports. But that may not mean much:

Both Bolden and McGloin should play a great deal against the Sycamores, who were 6-5 last season but won only two games the five seasons before that. Kickoff is at noon.

Bolden, a sophomore, was the Lions’ starting quarterback for the first half of last season. He won the starting nod over junior Matt McGloin, who played more in the latter half. McGloin was mostly reasonably effective, but he threw five interceptions in a terrible game in the Nittany Lions’ bowl outing against Florida.

Bolden had five touchdowns against seven interceptions for Penn State in 2010, but held his own for a freshman. There were rumblings during the offseason that he would transfer after losing his job to McGloin down the stretch, but Joe Paterno wouldn’t let him leave. And here we are. It sounds like the Bolden vs. McGloin storyline could continue for a while.
