Penn State Hires Craig Fitzgerald As Strength Coach, According To Report

Penn State has hired South Carolina strength and conditioning coach Craig Fitzgerald to the same position according to Fight On State's Mark Brennan.

Fitzgerald resigned at South Carolina earlier in the day, with Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier releasing a statement on the departure and subsequent hiring of assistant strength and conditioning coach Joe Connolly.

"We feel very fortunate to have had Joe Connolly right here for the past three years," said Spurrier said in the release. "He and Coach Fitzgerald together put in the running and lifting programs we have in place at South Carolina. We will not miss a beat with Coach Connolly in charge of our strength and conditioning program. We wish Coach Fitz and his family all the best."

Fitzgerald, a Philadelphia native, spent three years in Columbia after overseeing strength and conditioning at both Harvard and his alma mater Maryland previously. He played football for the Terrapins from 1994-1996.

The news marks the end of now-former strength and conditioning coach John Thomas' career at Penn State. Thomas had just finished his 20th season on the Nittany Lions' staff under former coach Joe Paterno.
