Penn State Reacts To Potential Bill O'Brien Hire

The reaction to the possible hire of Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien to be the head football coach at Penn State has drawn mostly anger from former players (like LaVar Arrington) and PSU fans. Here are some reactions from around the internet.

Former player D.J. Dozier:

Dozier – If only relationship between players/university, “is one in which they write checks, how does that make you feel?”

Evan Royster:

it could be a good fit… we could use some help on offense and he has clearly had some success… can he do it w/o tom [Bradley] tho?

Central Pennsylvania-based journalist Cory Giger:

Level of anger so far from fans, former PSU players over O’Brien hire very telling. Big Q now: How it impacts ticket sales, booster support.

Some former players are upset that the new hire isn’t connected to Penn State; some fans and current players are upset that the process that led to O’Brien’s supposed hiring was conducted in darkness. My guess is that these feelings will eventually soften, at least to a degree, especially if O’Brien does well in his first season. If he turns out to be a capable coach, then concerns about the process will largely fade away. In the meantime, though, it sounds like most of the Penn State family is pretty upset.
