Bill O'Brien Penn State Contract Details Released

Ben Jones has the details on new Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien’s contract. Here they are:

O’Brien will get a five-year deal with a base salary of $950,000 per year, and the annual salary will increase five percent per year. There will also be performance incentives of up to $200,000 per year, and he can also make money from Nike and from TV and radio deals. Penn State will also provide him with “regular exclusive benefits.”

Cory Giger notes that O'Brien can make $1 million more from TV and radio and $350,000 from his deal with Nike.

Kevin Powers points out that O’Brien’s salary would place him in the bottom tier of Big Ten coaches by salary, even though PSU’s football program is the most profitable in the conference. That doesn’t mean that O’Brien is the wrong hire, of course, but I’d expect that to be something PSU fans get upset about if he doesn’t do well right away.
