Not to be outdone in the world of trying to get in on the world of college football expansion, Memphis Athletic Director R.C. Johnson caused a bit of a stir today at Conference USA's Basketball Media Day with some comments about college football expansion:
↵↵↵"I don’t want to lie to you," Johnson said. "In the ideal world, the SEC would call and we’d go tomorrow.
↵"But in the meantime we’re going to do everything we can to make this thing [Conference USA] get stronger and stronger."
↵
Then there was this:
↵↵↵"Money, money, money," Johnson said when asked his main reasons for wanting to join the BCS.
↵
Personally, I applaud his frankness to a degree, but ... seriously? You're doing this at your own conference's media day? I'm all for bettering your position in the NCAA landscape and it's obviously about the money, as Johnson admits. But there's a time and a place for everything. Everyone knows that Memphis would gladly accept a BCS-conference invitation, so there's no reason to trip over yourself to make that known.
↵A simple "It's our obligation to internally review any opportunity that may present itself, but we remain a proud and loyal member of Conference USA" would have done the job.
