New Pitt football coach Todd Graham added his final assistant to complete his new coaching staff. Graham hired former Middle Tennessee State defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Randall McCray to coach Pitt's safeties and special teams.
↵This hiring does more than simply fill a role - it represents a change in philosophy from the Dave Wannstedt era. Wannstedt relied on Jeff Hafley to coach the entire secondary, but Graham now has a safeties coach and in Tony Gibson, a cornerbacks coach. Both Gibson and McCray have other duties on the staff, so it's a good thing there are two of them. And when you add in the fact that Pitt's secondary really struggled last season, the Panthers can use all the help they can get back there.
↵McCray also previously coached linebackers, the defensive line, and safeties at Wisconsin, so he has some experience working for a major Division I program. Another thing Pitt fans should be excited about is that while at Wisconsin, he was the recruiting coordinator. So he also has experience recruiting in a BCS conference.
↵Graham's staff has a large mix of talented assistants and at first glance, it looks like he's put together a good core.
