March Madness Bracket Update 2011: Duke, North Carolina Advance

North Carolina and Duke advanced in today’s early NCAA Tournament games. Also, No. 1 Ohio State currently holds a huge lead on No. 8 George Mason, so it seems pretty safe to assume the Buckeyes will advance.

UNC’s game against Washington and Duke’s matchup against Michigan were both close ones. I was watching the North Carolina game, and it was an extremely fast-paced matchup between two athletic, offense-oriented teams. Ultimately, the Tarheels came out on top, 86-83, and they’ll advance to the Sweet Sixteen despite allowing 170 points total in their two March Madness games so far.

The Buckeyes currently hold a 24-point lead on GMU early in the second half. Let’s assume they’ll advance. Here’s what the bracket looks like:

The Southeast bracket was set yesterday. No. 8 Butler will face No. 4 Wisconsin in the next round, with No. 3 BYU facing No. 2 Florida.

In the East, it appears that No. 1 Ohio State will face No. 4 Kentucky. Meanwhile, No. 2 UNC awaits the winner of tonight’s game between Marquette and Syracuse.

In the West, Duke will play the winner of the ongoing game between No. 4 Texas and No. 5 Arizona. Meanwhile, No. 2 San Diego State will face No. 3 UConn.

Only the Southwest bracket remains largely unsettled, with only No. 12 Richmond the only team to advance to the Sweet Sixteen so far.
