Mike Haywood Case: Haywood Also Seeking Financial Compensation And Apology

After the Mike Haywood news broke, FOX News in Houston came out with more details. The financial discussion seems to hinge not so much around Haywood’s unfulfilled years with Pitt, but his buyout from the University of Miami-Ohio that Pitt allegedly has not paid:

“When the coach was hired by Pitt one of the promises made was that they would pay his buyout with Miami and they simply have not done so, will not respond to our requests that they do so and now Coach Haywood has demand letters from Miami University asking him to pay the $300,000 buyout.”

Beyond the financial portion of any potential agreement with Pitt, Buzbee is certain of one item he will ask for.

“An important component of anything we would ask for would be an apology and an admission from Pittsburgh that they acted too hastily,” Buzbee said.

It will be interesting to see how far this goes. I’m no lawyer, but I’d think both sides would want to avoid any litigation. Paying the entire $300,000 may not be something Pitt wants to do (actually, I’m pretty sure it’s not what they want to do), but there could be a settlement for some agreed-upon amount that saves both sides a lot of headaches.
