Former Rutgers/Arizona QB Tom Savage Heading To Pitt

Pitt's quarterback unit got a bit of help for 2013 with the news that former Rutgers QB Tom Savage is transferring to the Panthers' program this fall. Savage isn't available immediately due to transfer rules, but will be able to suit up for Pitt in 2013 and will have one year of eligibility left.

The case of Savage is a bit of a strange one. He was the starting quarterback at Rutgers before being unseated. He then headed to Arizona, but spread guru Rich Rodriguez went there and Savage's style of play wouldn't have been a good fit. Savage then left Arizona and he has since said Rodriguez' coming on board isn't the reason for his departure, though - so take that for what it's worth.

With only one year left, Savage obviously isn't a long-term solution for Pitt. But the thing he will do is immediately compete for playing time and hopefully push others to be better. Current quarterback Tino Sunseri will be gone leaving Chad Voytik, Trey Anderson, and Mark Myers in the mix. Voytik is presumed to be the quarterback of the future, but will have only one year of college football under his belt by that time and he might not be ready to take the reins just yet. Either way, having Savage around gives the position a bit more depth.
