Penguins Open Preseason With Visit From Detroit Red Wings

The Penguins open their preseason schedule tonight, hosting the Detroit Red Wings at the Consol Energy Center at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised on Root Sports Pittsburgh.

The Penguins will be led by Evgeni Malkin, Chris Kunitz and Kris Letang while the Red Wings will have Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstromm in uniform. You can take a look at the rest of the Penguins’ and Red Wings’ lineups here.

Notable absentees for the Penguins include Steve Sullivan, Brooks Orpik, Jordan Staal and Tyler Kennedy. None of this is alarming, however, as preseason lineups are constantly juggled to allow fringe and minor league players a chance to prove themselves in a game situation.

The player to watch for the Penguins tonight could be Richard Park. A former second-round pick of the Pens in 1994, the 35-year-old native of Seoul, South Korea could prove to be a boost on the Penguins’ fourth line and penalty kill in the absence of Max Talbot.

Park has had a strong training camp thus far and looks to have a strong chance of making the Penguins opening day roster.

“Obviously, it’s exciting. It’s a great opportunity for myself,” Park said. “It’s a privilege to play among these guys, proven winners. I look forward to the opportunity.”
