ESPN Names Pirates Baseball Team Most Deserving Of Contraction

ESPN's Page 2 lists the ten pro sports teams most deserving of contraction. The Pirates come in at No. 3, behind the Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers. Other teams deserving of contraction, according to Page 2's readers, include the entire NHL, the Florida Marlins, the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Chicago Cubs. Only one NFL team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, is on the list.

Of course, contracting the Pirates makes no sense at all - their 18 straight years of losing speak for themselves, but they have the best ballpark in baseball, and the release of their financial records this year showed that they're also profitable, albeit barely. The Marlins and Rays make a little more sense, although both organizations are run cleverly enough that they win games. Moving them to better markets is the best answer, although with the Marlins won't be moved, since they're building a new ballpark in Miami.

ESPN also notes that the Yankees just missed the list, which is too bad.
