When the Pirates announced the hirings of coaches Ray Searage, Gregg Ritchie, Jeff Banister and Nick Leyva a few days ago, some fans complained that after 18 years of losing, the Pirates had merely hired more of their own - all but Leyva were internal hires. Today, however, the Pirates announced another round of coaches, and most of these are from outside the organization. First base coach Luis Silverio has spent the past 35 years with the Kansas City Royals and has served as a first base coach and as a third base coach. New bullpen coach Euclides Rojas has worked in the same role for the Boston Red Sox. General coach Mark Strittmatter was a bullpen catcher for the Colorado Rockies for eight years. Only bullpen catcher Heberto Andrade is an internal hire.
↵Also, updating previous reports, Banister will be the bench coach, not the third base coach, and Leyva will be the third base coach.
