Kristy Robinson reports that Pirates prospect Robbie Grossman has broken his hamate bone.
↵↵↵The typical return from this type of surgery is about three-weeks, with the wrist in a cast throughout that period. However, a player usually will have to wait about six weeks before returning to the field or training on a normal basis.

This is too bad. Grossman had one of the biggest breakout performances of any Pirates minor leaguer, then followed that up with an even bigger breakout in the Arizona Fall League. He should easily be ready to return in time for the 2012 regular season, but the problem is that sometimes players who have hamate bone injuries struggle to hit for power right away. It will be hard for Grossman to capitalize on his 2011 breakout if that turns out to be the case.
