Bill Brink of the Post-Gazette tweets that Pirates star Andrew McCutchen is still interested in an extension:
↵↵↵Andrew McCutchen on long-term extension: "We definitely want to work something out but that’s nothing that I can control right now."
↵
It's good to hear he's interested. Here's Pirates GM Neal Huntington on the potential extension:
↵↵↵"When you enter a negotiation, you're at X, the player's at Z and you work awfully hard to try to find Y," Huntington said. "There has to be a compromise, there has to be a shared risk on both sides."
↵
When he's been asked about the McCutchen extension, Huntington has consistently implied that McCutchen's side hasn't been willing to compromise. Without knowing exactly what financial terms the two sides are discussing - and how many years the contract runs - it's hard to know what to make of that. McCutchen won't be a free agent until after 2015, so one issue might be how many years after that he's willing to sign for.
↵In any case, McCutchen is a great bet to age well, due to his athleticism, good health, and well-rounded skill set. If the Pirates could sign him to a six- or seven-year contract, that would be ideal.
