Pedro Alvarez Heads To Disabled List As Pedro Ciriaco Promoted

The Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates will promote infielder Pedro Ciriaco from Indianapolis. There's no official word on why Ciriaco is being promoted, but the obvious conclusion is that the Pirates will place third baseman Pedro Alvarez on the disabled list with quadriceps trouble, which kept him out of Friday night's interleague game against the Detroit Tigers.

Let's hope that doesn't turn out to be the case. Alvarez has, for the most part, been a big flop this season, but he was beginning to show small signs of coming out of his funk, with a three-run homer Thursday and a couple of walks on Friday.

Ciriaco, 26, has a good glove but can't hit at all, batting .190 at Indianapolis. I wouldn't expect him to get much playing time. Instead, expect to see the Pirates go with some combination of Brandon Wood and Steve Pearce, if in fact Alvarez is heading to the disabled list.

UPDATE 3:39 PM: Colin Dunlap tweets that Alvarez is, in fact, headed to the DL.
