Catching-Thin Pirates To Call Up Wyatt Toregas, Place Chris Snyder On DL

Rob Biertempfel tweets that the Pirates will promote catcher Wyatt Toregas from Indianapolis and place Chris Snyder on the disabled list.

The Pirates are really scraping the bottom of the barrel here, but that's what happens when your three top catchers (Snyder, Ryan Doumit and Jason Jaramillo) all get injured. They'll apparently go with a tandem of Dusty Brown and Toregas until one of those three gets back.

Toregas had gone 1-for-29 (yes, you read that right) with four walks at Indianapolis. He is unlikely to provide much of anything on offense, and is only around to give Brown (who himself is pretty bad) an occasional breather. If the Pirates were going to be without Snyder, Doumit and Jaramillo for too long, I'd prefer they called up fellow Indianapolis backstop Eric Fryer, who's younger and a far more interesting hitter. But that would create some roster bureaucracy for a player the Pirates would probably rather keep in the long term.
