Lyle Overbay's Pirates Career Comes To An End

The Pirates are about to designate Lyle Overbay for assignment, which effectively means he isn't going to play for the Pirates anymore. The Pirates will be on the hook for the rest of his salary this year, unless some team is stupid enough to claim him, which I doubt.

After the acquisition of Derrek Lee this weekend, this trade comes as no surprise. Lee will join the Pirates Monday night for the start of their series against one of Lee's former teams, the Cubs.

It's unfortunate that Overbay was as ineffective as he was, but it was well within the range of possibility, and it was unwise of the Pirates to spend $5 million on a guy who, given his age and mediocre recent performances, was unlikely to be much better than Steve Pearce and John Bowker anyway. At least they were willing to admit their mistake, however.

UPDATE: The move is now official.
