David Todd at Bucs Dugout notes that in addition to the promotions of pitchers Jared Hughes and Jeff Locke noted here earlier on Tuesday), the Pirates have also promoted pitchers Danny Moskos and Aaron Thompson, along with third baseman Pedro Alvarez. They have also activated Evan Meek from the disabled list.
↵Moskos probably would have been promoted regardless of the Pirates' injury situation, but his and Thompson's promotions are convenient, in that the Pirates really need arms right now. In fact, the Pirates cleared 40-man roster space for these moves by placing Paul Maholm and Kevin Correia on the 60-day DL. Alvarez will see more at-bats at third base, mainly because Indianapolis' season is over and the Pirates want him to get more playing time. He has struggled greatly throughout the season.
↵Given that the Pirates can promote many more players than this now that active rosters have expanded to 40 players, it's notable that first baseman Matt Hague, who had a good season at Indianapolis, and center fielder Gorkys Hernandez, who's already on the 40-man roster, weren't included in the callups.
↵Maholm's move to the 60-day DL may mean the end of his Pirates career. The Bucs have an option on him next year, and if they don't pick it up, he'll be a free agent.
