First baseman / hitter Dmitri Young worked out for the Pirates on Monday, MLB.com's Tom Singer tweets.

Young hasn't played in the big leagues since 2008, hasn't played any defensive position but first base since 2005, and hasn't ever been a particularly good defensive player. So if the Pirates were to sign Young (certainly to a minor-league deal), it would purely be due to his hitting ability. Young did post on-base percentages of .394 and .378 during his brief 2007-2008 renaissance with the Nationals, so it's possible the hitting talent is still there. But due to his defensive deficiencies, his tactical value as a bench player is so limited that it's hard to see how he can help much.
