A.J. Burnett took Dan McCutchen's No. 34 when he joined the Pirates, but it sounds like it's not such a bad deal for McCutchen, who got Burnett to agree to set up a college fund for his unborn daughter in return.
↵↵↵A.J. Burnett, who took McCutchen's No. 34 jersey, will start a College America 529 plan for McCutchen's daugher, McCutchen said. Not quite yet -- the child has to be born first so she can get a Social Security number -- but soon.
↵
McCutchen's daughter will be born in May. Unlike Burnett, McCutchen is a role player who might never see a big payday as a ballplayer, so while there are needier people out there, a college fund for McCutchen's daughter means more than one might think.
↵It sounds like Burnett is already making a positive impression as a Pirate.
