Baseball America's Jim Callis wonders whether the Pirates' Pedro Alvarez might turn out to be one of the biggest hitting busts in the history of the MLB Draft.
↵↵↵Perhaps if Alvarez can get himself into better shape, he can reclaim the bat speed and hitting ability that made him the No. 2 choice just four years ago. If not, you could argue that he's the biggest waste of hitting talent in draft history. None of the players mentioned above generated the same kind of glowing offensive scouting reports, and none signed for as much as Alvarez did.

The article comes with an incredibly depressing list of draft busts.
↵At this point, I'm trying not to overreact to Alvarez's performance this year because it's so early in the season. Unfortunately, it isn't just a couple weeks' worth of bad statistics. It's Spring Training and last season as well, and in both those cases, Alvarez looked thoroughly clueless. It's too early to call him a bust, but it's not to early to steel ourselves for the possibility that he is.
